Nothing Changes ‘til You Do: The First Steps of a Journey

I’ve noticed a strange tension in the world. So many of us want things to change, say we need things to change, but as the saying goes, “Nothing changes ‘til you do.” In most cases, we either don’t know how or don’t want to go on that journey. Maybe we even secretly or overtly wish that the things or people around us will just change on their own.

This topic of change has never been more salient than in 2022. I’m hopeful that the world and its systems are ripe for change, making it the right time for personal growth, too. The former may not even be possible until we address the latter. The Great Reflection (with resignation being the behavioral manifestation of reflection) is inviting us to think not only about what we’re moving away from, but what we’re moving toward and whether that’s someplace we really want to go.

Where Do You Want to Be? What Are You Willing to Change to Get There?

Prompt yourself with a pair of questions: 1) Where do you want to be instead? 2) What are you willing to change to get there? Those thoughts should naturally go together like a candle and its flame.

Once we have a general idea of our direction, we can start moving in that direction, even if all the details are not yet in place. A friend of mine calls this finding our “no regrets” moves and starting with that.

It is difficult to find the time and energy to create change, that is absolutely true, and it takes different kinds of strength. That fact alone can be enough to turn some people off from the process of change. While a select few may have the ability and circumstances to “Eat, Pray, Love” their way into evolution—quit everything and start fresh—most of us do not; it’s just not realistic.

So, what about those of us who must find time for change within the daily rhythms (and distractions) of our day-to-day life? Well, the good news is that it’s definitely possible — people do it all the time and while it does take focus and intention, it’s not as impossible as it may seem.

In fact, it turns out that from our mindset and thought patterns, to our habits and environments, we have many opportunities to create change. And sometimes, it just takes finding the one or two that will work for you to create momentum and progress.

The Tools of Change

Are you ready to put the work in but don’t know where to start? Consider the Tools of Change. I created this series or package of modules, tools, and reflections, to help people make sustainable change through a series of choices and shifts that build upon each other.

Real change happens when you invest intentionally over time. The Tools of Change format allows participants to go at their own pace. We cover topics that help you embrace multiple approaches for driving change such as goal-setting, environments of change, powerful habits, mindset, strengths, drivers of High Performance, and getting & staying on track. The self-paced program is available right now.

Where do you want to be a year from now? What are you willing to do to get there?
