The Importance of Organizational Culture

Organizational culture is a shared pattern of values and behaviors that teams develop as they operate collectively to deliver results. While, on some level, this is a natural state—something your team sort of “falls” into based on individual personalities, team dynamics, and more—you can also lend time, attention, and intention to shift organizational culture as a response to internal or external events. 

For example, in the face of COVID-19, businesses everywhere have had to pivot and adapt. For some teams, it led to 100% remote work. For others, it increased hours, amped up the pressure, and raised the stakes. There are some businesses who have had to recalibrate their goals completely. Because the shifts are substantive, leaders are particularly sensitive to the risk presented if they ignore the cultural implications. Those who are proactive and aware of this are not allowing their “natural” or “pre-set” organizational culture to dictate their future. Instead, they’re shaping it like clay, using it like the tool it is. 

Categories of Organizational Culture

As with leadership, there is no definitive or perfect model to examine culture. The key is to find a model that resonates and is measurable. This allows you to assess your culture and discuss results, which is the key to translating intention into action. 

The model of culture we like to work with has nine categories: adapting, anchoring, bolstering, cultivating, executing, exploring, pathfinding, producing, and stabilizing. Initially, determine where your team already lies along the spectrum of organizational culture. Then, after you lay out your goals for the future, ask yourself these questions: does your organizational culture match up with those goals? What traits can you adopt from each kind of culture to help bring you closer to achieving your goals?
