Play to Your Team’s Strengths: How Predictive Index Accelerates Impact

Understanding the individual and combined strengths of your team members goes a long way towards helping you get the absolute best out of people. But how can you know how people truly work? Some people’s idea of their work ethic can be vastly different from what their abilities and strengths actually showcase. Enter Predictive Index (P.I.): an enormously helpful and scientifically valid solution that helps leaders get on the same page and design a strategy that accelerates impact by playing to people’s strengths. You wouldn’t play a game of chess without understanding the unique strengths and abilities of every piece, would you?

P.I. goes beyond what people can do right now by helping you understand people’s natural abilities and inclinations — those that might be untapped potential. Motivation is yet another box to unlock, and recognizing these things in others — strengths and motivation — is a powerful combination. Keep in mind, this might involve shifting people and work around — a daunting task for any manager (or chess player). But if you use the information gleaned from P.I. wisely, it’s well worth the time and effort. 

Behavioral Assessment

To start, the behavioral assessment allows you to get to know your own — or in this case, your team member’s — strengths, behaviors, and motivations by gauging drives and needs. This multiple choice assessment, which takes less than 10 minutes to complete, engages the team member and gives results that break down their personality in the context of the workplace. 

All of these choices are associated with four factors that determine workplace behavior: dominance, extraversion, patience, and formality. After completing the assessment, you’re assigned a Reference Profile that will give you detailed insight. Think of this information as a jumping off point!

Strategy Assessment

Knowing what to change is only the beginning, it’s the how that takes strategy to implement. It seems obvious that a common strategy can be made and implemented, but unalignment between senior leaders is more common than you might think. Often, according to research, they agree on no more than 70% of their objectives. This particular assessment focuses on aligning your people strategy (based off of the results of the behavioral assessment) with your business strategy. When leaders are out of alignment, it’s a problem that will only worsen without intervention, leading to missed goals, lack of collaboration, and minimal engagement. Strategy assessment puts everyone on the same page so they can move forward as one to achieve their goals and increase impact. 

Think of it this way, understanding people’s strengths and motivations helps you build and assemble your team — that’s your base, the chessboard lineup. On top of that, you build your business strategy, which often requires shifting and rebuilding. That might sound intimidating, but you’re not going in blind. Your assessment results are the playbook to your overarching strategy and ultimate success.
